Unix and Linux Host Security

A common misconception amongst network administrators is that their Unix- or Linux-based systems are inherently secure. While most Unix and Linux servers widely regarded as the most secure operating platforms available, this type of thinking is dangerous and can expose your organization to a multitude of security problems.

UNIX and Linux systems are typically installed "wide open" to security vulnerabilities and require a significant degree of configuration and tuning to lock down. In addition, as time goes on many of these systems become more insecure with the introduction of new software and system modifications. These vulnerabilities typically require significant expertise to discover and remove, and may not be as apparent as with other operating systems.

Solarcore can work with your organization to tighten security on its Unix and Linux hosts. We are skilled at performing security services for these platforms, such as:

  • Thorough analysis of your existing Unix/Linux security environment, including vulnerability scanning and assessments;
  • Tightening and tuning of system services;
  • Enforcement of strong passwords for system users that make it tougher for an attacker to guess or otherwise acquire them;
  • Establishment of advanced authentication systems such as Kerberos, Radius, SecurID and digital certificates;
  • Enabling advanced logging features and ensuring that appropriate, accurate information is reported to your network administrators; and
  • Configuration and deployment of Host Intrusion Detection Systems (HIDS) to automate tasks such as file integrity checking.
